Position Summary:


The Clinical Lab Scientist is a non-exempt position reporting to the Director of the Laboratory. This role involves performing diagnostic testing on patient samples to assist physicians in diagnosing and monitoring various disease states. The Clinical Lab Scientist requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. The position demands the ability to function effectively in a stressful environment and take appropriate action when necessary.
Essential functions include following standardized procedures to prepare samples for testing, operating laboratory equipment efficiently, and analyzing test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. The Clinical Lab Scientist reports and documents results according to organizational standards, performing automated tests using computerized instruments and automated equipment. The role also includes running tests, analyzing results, and reporting findings to physicians, registered nurses, or patients. Quality assurance tasks are performed to ensure the accuracy of equipment, and the scientist is required to demonstrate core competencies annually or upon request.
Additionally, the Clinical Lab Scientist maintains records of procedures performed, patient results, and quality control for all tests, ensuring compliance with quality control documentation. The role involves preventive maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, reading and understanding procedure manuals annually, collecting biological specimens, and preparing and forwarding them to the appropriate reference laboratory. The Clinical Lab Scientist is responsible for instructing students and new employees on procedures and departmental policies, checking and reporting supply deficiencies, and updating procedures as needed.
Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations is essential, and the Clinical Lab Scientist contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team approach within the laboratory. The position also involves actively seeking ways to improve continuous processes, participating in service excellence initiatives, and performing other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical Lab Services required 
  • ASCP Certification or eligibility required 
  • Primary Source Verification: American Society for Clinical Pathology
