Department/Unit Summary

An LPN in a hospital setting provides direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians. They play an essential role in delivering quality care to patients, assisting with daily activities, and monitoring patient health. Below is a general job description for an LPN working in a hospital:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care:
    • Monitor and record vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate).
    • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, and feeding.
    • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician.
    • Observe and report patient changes in condition to the supervising RN or physician.
  2. Clinical Support:
    • Assist with wound care, dressing changes, and the application of medical treatments.
    • Perform routine lab tests and prepare patients for diagnostic procedures.
    • Set up and assist with medical equipment, such as IVs, catheters, and respiratory devices.
  3. Patient Education:
    • Provide patient education regarding medications, treatments, and health conditions.
    • Advise patients and their families on how to manage their health and recover at home.
  4. Documentation:
    • Maintain accurate patient records, including medical histories, progress notes, and treatment plans.
    • Document all patient interactions and nursing care provided, ensuring compliance with hospital protocols.
  5. Collaboration:
    • Work as part of the healthcare team, collaborating with RNs, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver optimal care.
    • Participate in patient care planning and communicate any changes in patient condition.
  6. Infection Control & Safety:
    • Follow proper infection control procedures to maintain patient safety and prevent the spread of diseases.
    • Ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients

Qualifications and requirements 
Applicants should have a current state LPN license and possess a associates degree from an accredited nursing school. Additional requirements include:

  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS and PALS are required within six months of hire. 
  • One year of experience preferred
  • ASLS certification preferred
